Coming soon! Coming. Coming?

2007 also promises to be a year rich in Hungarian films. According to estimates by the Motion Picture Public Foundation sixteen feature films will certainly be completed in time for the next Film Festival. The wave of 1956 films continues, Ferenc Török's long awaited Overnight is coming, Kornél Mundruczó is resuming work on Delta interrupted by the tragic death of Lajos Bertók…Films in the making in 2007.

New online centre for short films from Budapest

Daazo.com - European Short Film Centre launches. The new online centre for European short films from Budapest aims to give the chance for young directors, festivals and studios to introduce themselves trough an innovative easy-to-use interface.

By presenting professional short films from the past few years, founders purpose to build a meeting point for cinephiles.

Erasmus Prize 2007 awarded to Péter Forgács

The Board of the Praemium Erasmianum Foundation has decided to award the Erasmus Prize 2007 to the Hungarian filmmaker and media artist Péter Forgács.

The Erasmus Prize is awarded annually to a person who has made an exceptionally important contribution to European culture, society or social science. The amount of the Prize is € 150.000. The presentation of the Prize will take place in the autumn of 2007.

Novelties of the Hungarian film industry

According to the organizing committee 35 thousand tickets were sold until February 2nd for the screenings of the 38th Hungarian Filmweek. So far 34 supplementary screenings have been organized.

Death of principal actor Lajos Bertók has been a devastating blow to the shooting of Kornél Mundruczó’s latest film Delta. After the producers’ decision to go on with the shooting, the question remained: could they find a powerful, imposing personality who could step in the late actor’s shoes.

The First Major Production Is Under Way at Stern Studios

As we reported earlier, several smaller productions were shot at Stern Studios in the autumn before its official opening on 7 December.

Following the test run, the Pomáz complex didn't need to wait long for its first feature film. Using both the 2200 and 1500 sq metre studios, filming for the English—German co-production Eichmann is under way at Stern.

Mária Sós Becomes New GHD President

Mária Sós is the new president of the Guild of Hungarian Directors.

As the new president of the guild told filmhu, the new leadership (with honorary president, Miklós Jancsó, and members Orsolya Székely, András Surányi, László Babiczki, András Fésős, Ádám Csillag, Ildikó Vajda, and György Pálos) aims to reactivate the softened GHD in representing filming industry interests.

Nimród Antal to Direct the Puskás film?

A feature film and documentary are planned. The director made world famous by Kontroll is to direct the film about the football legend who died last Friday, revealed FigyelőNet.

Producer Ádám Neményi informed us that the outlines of the film were still sketchy, and that it would take a large budget by Hungarian standards to shoot the movie about Ferenc Puskás.

Film financing survives

STILL NO DUTIESFilm sponsorship will remain exempt from duties. The amount spent on making films in Hungary is expected to rise from 22.3 billion forints last year to over 25 billion forints this year.

Film sponsorship will remain exempt from duties. Neither the finance ministry, nor the government are planning on withdrawing this scheme. A statement was issued to MTI by the ministry reacting to press reports.

Etyekwood may be built by spring

SHOOTING MAY START IN MAYThe walls of the Sándor Korda Film Studios are standing; the project can be completed by Spring 2007, managing director László Krisán told MTI.

According to him, they have finished earthworks, developed the area's infrastructure and the by-pass around the village has been completed. The studio is expected to be built by Spring 2007 on a 15—16 acre former army base, with panoramic views, situated between vineyards and the village.

Productions and Opportunities at Stern Film Studios

ADVERTISING AND LOVEIn August filmmakers were able to take possession of Stern Studios in Pomáz, the largest film studio in Hungary.

Since then three productions have been shot at the brand new complex: a Dutch commercial, and short films by Tibor Máthé and Sándor Kardos were made here.

Overnight – the shooting is over

Ferenc Török’s third feautre film is already in the course of editing. The director, recently back from India, speaks about this yuppie story full of tension as his most thrilling work so far.

The premiere of the film that tells the events of 24 hours and takes place in different countries will, in all probability, be in the Hungarian Film Festival.

Introducing Fade In Pitch Forum

In the course of the professional programs of the Film Feast of Pécs, the Fade In Script Consulting presented Central European Pitch Forum.

The organizers, Gábor Krigler and Balázs Lovas, said that the aim of the project concentrating on the Central European region, is for scripts and producers to find each other.

The Country of the Hawk

Following Argo, Attila Árpa has set about preparing a feature length animation. In our series dealing with the most important Hungarian animation films in the making this time we visited The Country of the Hawk.

"Last week the final versions of the character sketches and backgrounds were finished.” The characters are based on the members of the crew. It is due to a new method called Kimera which had been developed by the team: they use the available softwers in a much more efficient way so it is possible to save money and time.

In the wake of Egill

The life of Egill Skallagrymsson, the poet and warrior, is a very important part of Icelandic culture. Áron Gauder, who became famous with The District, has undertaken to adapt his story in a special way.

The creators of The District are working on a new animation movie. In Egill, besides the young animators, Géza Bereményi also took part in the elaboration of the treatment.

Robin Hood is being shot again

The recently stolen parts of the BBC-serial Robin Hood made in Hungary is being shot again. Though the considerable award offered by the British production company to the person who could help to find the copies is still in force.

In spite of this the staff is working day and night in order to show the first episodes on TV next month.

Béla Ternovszky: Cat City 2.

The fans have long been demanding the second part of BélaTrenovszky-József Nepp’s cultic cartoon film Cat City 2.

The making of the next part of the film made in 1986 has reached the halfway stage nearly 20 years later. The moving and animation of the figures, objects has just started. Some computer graphics will be used in the “traditional” cartoon but digital technology has also disadvantages.
