You are an Author, Director or Producer. You have bought, or are planning to buy, the rights to adapt a novel, a play or a comic strip.

You are a publisher. These issues are of your concern.

You will find the answer to any question related to the development of literary adaptation projects (artistic, economic, juridical, or marketing development).

You will benefit from the experience of European professionals who will assist you in carrying out successfully your personal endeavours.

1. Foreword

The originality of MEDISCRIPT, what makes the programme unique is its intention to master tools and strategies to translate the written word into light and sound.
Over the past few years, we have seen quality films from literary works. Considering the market trends, producers' increasing demand for new film subjects, professional manifestations devoted to literary adaptation start to be known and publishers deliberate about formula to raise the value of their rights However, matters linked to adaptation are rarely or partially considered in training programmes.
This is MEDISCRIPT's mission. Start a job of reflection, of information and of enlightenment on literary adaptation devoted to authors, directors and producers.

2. Description

MEDISCRIPT takes as its primary subject, techniques linked to literary adaptation, writing and overall project development. MEDISCRIPT will make the point on practices and techniques necessary to transform any published work (novels, plays, comic strips…) into an audiovisual project in the best conditions possible, both from the artistic and economic point of view.
- The Training provided in MEDISCRIPT has been conceived for scriptwriters, adapters, directors, producers and publishers.
- In MEDISCIPT participating projects are selected beforehand and are used as pedagogic support during the seminars. The literary adaptation project will be followed from a very early stage, all through the development phase.

3. Target group

Training in MEDISCRIPT is targeted:
- To professionals with an adaptation project on the form of a treatment and a copyright option. A priority will be given to the grouping of authors - directors - producers. A maximum of twelve projects will be selected.
- To professionals without a project willing to comprehend practices and techniques which permit to adapt a novel, play or comic strip for cinema or television These professionals may benefit from the work done on participating projects. A maximum of ten participants without projects will be selected.

4. The training formula

MEDISCRIPT is structured in two seminars. The first seminar will will have a duration of 6 days (June 2005). The second seminar will be will have a duration of 4 days (January 2006). Between the two seminars there will be a six month follow up period.

5. The seminars

The first seminar will contain the whole process that leads the work from the literary to the audiovisual: Both the chains of development and writing will be revisited from the angle of adaptation: audiovisual rights and specific problems linked with literary adaptations, negotiation of rights, publishers-producers, theories of literary adaptation, screenwriter - adapter, directors specialised in literary adaptation… The first seminar will comprise:
- Plenary sessions
- Film previews presented as a case studies with the participation of invited directors, producers, writers
- One to one sessions where participants will work individually on the project
- Reduced workshops where participants will work out solutions in close proximity to invited experts.

The second seminar
- Will reinforce practices and techniques provided during the six month follow up.
- Will include intense work on pitching techniques, that is training on project presentation.

Follow up
Between both seminars MEDISCRIPT proposes a six month follow up, a consulting period where both writing and overall project development will be considered. Meeting between participants and tutors could be organised during the follow up period.

6. Experts

MEDISCRIPT consists on a non professorial training. Tutors will share with participants their experiences on questions relative to adaptation.

MEDISCRIPT has the agreement of the following experts to participate on the project, subject to their availability:

Prune BERGE (Gallimard - France), Armandio COROADO (producer - Portugal), Michel GYORY (European Institute of Author's rights - Belgium), Marion HANSEL (author. director, producer - Belgium), Claude MILLER (author, director - France), Uberto PASOLINI (producer - Red Waves - UK), Karine RIAHI (lawyer - Levy-Riahi - France), Angeles GONZALES-SINDE (Spain).

7. Working language

During the plenary sessions simultaneous translation is foreseen in English, French Italian and Spanish
Languages accepted for the project follow up and scriptwriting are English, French, Italian and Spanish

8. Eligibility criteria

Candidates must
- Be nationals of a member State of the European Union or a country belonging to the MEDIA Programme;
- Be producer, scriptwriter, writer, director or publisher;
- Have a proven experience in audiovisuals or writing;
- Producers, directors or scriptwriters must have produced, directed or written a feature and /or five shorts (fiction, animation, documentaries, clips);
- Writers must have already published a work (novel, comic , play…);
- Publishers must have at least two years experience;
- Master English, French, Italian or Spanish (languages of plenary sessions).

9. The dossier:

Candidates with projects must deliver the following documents:
- The registration form;
- CV of professionals attached to the project: producer, scriptwriter, director, writer;
- Letter of intent;
- Synopsis (1 page maximum);
- Treatment (10 to 30 pages) presenting the core of the project;
- Letter of attestation related to the option on the literary work;
- The literary works can be original of any country;
- Accepted languages are French, English, Italian and Spanish;

Candidates without project must deliver the following documents:
- The registration form;
- CV of candidates willing to participate in MEDISCRIPT: be it a producer, scriptwriter, director, writer;
- Letter of motivation relative to their participation in MEDISCRIPT;
- If it is the case a letter of intent relative to the project of adaptation of a literary work to audiovisual;
- Accepted languages are French, English, Italian and Spanish.

10. Dates:

- The first seminar will take place the during the first fortnight of June 2005
- The second seminar will take place the during the second fortnight of January 2006

11. Registration and participation fees

Participants with project

850 € two persons
600 € one person
This amount covers training in place, the six months follow up, accommodation and subsistence.

Participants without project

350 €
This amount covers attendance in the first seminar accommodation and subsistence

The participant must pay all charges relating to travel.
MEDISCRIPT will provide scholarships to invite two candidate with projects. Priority will be given to resident in countries which have recently joined the European Union (Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Czech Republic, Slovaquia, Malta, Chyprus, Bulgaria).

12. Organisers

CEPI - Consortium Européen d'Ecriture pour l'Image is a consortium of companies founded to organise events and manifestations linked to cinema and audiovisuals. CEPI works on three main fields, training, writing and project development.
