The Salamon tower in Visegrád

The five-storey, 31 meter high hexagonal tower is the core of the lower castle system. A road carved into the rock leads up to its entrance through the castle gate. Its thick walls are laced by only a few narrow loopholes and windows decorated with Gothic colums. It was founded by King Béla IV in the second half of the 13th century, following the Mongol invasion. It was badly damaged during the Turkish occupation, today it can be visited in its reconstructed form and serves as the site of exhibitions.
