The Citadel on top of Gellért Hill offers the most magnificent view of the city. This is where the Statue of Liberty stands, which has become a symbol of Budapest. The main purpose of the fortress built by Emperor Franz Joseph in 1852 was to keep the citizens of Pest at bay. From Hotel Gellért, a promenade with numerous look-out points leads up to the fortress.
