The Monostori fortress in Komárom
The construction of the fortress on the bank of the Danube started after the war of independence of 1848-49. The group of buildings consists of 14 parts and about 640 chambers, its area is around 34,000 square meters. From the outside, only the commander’s tower is visible. The fortress is surrounded by a 9-meter-deep and about 1,800-meter-long moat. Its most spectacular room is a classroom divided by arched pillars. Its brick walls are covered in limestone, the doors and windows are framed by stones.
