Margit bridge
French engineers designed the bridge constructed in 1876, which is apparent in the its decoration. In 1900, a wing leading to Margitsziget (Margaret Island) was added to the bridge. It was blown up in WW2 but reconstructed by 1948. An interesting feature of the bridge is that it is „broken” at the island at an angle of about 30 degrees. This is necessary in order for the pillars to stand perpendicular to the river’s current in both river branches and to provide access to the island. A two by two-lane road and Budapest’s most important tram line passes through the bridge.
