Newcomer in the Hungarian distribution
Though the market of the independent films has shrunk in Hungary, a new company arrived recently. After the SPI International Hungary left the market in 2009 and the distributional section of Budapest Film is also welcoming investors, surprisingly the Palace Pictures http://www.palacepictures.net/ launched distributional activity. The Palace Pictures is owned by the Palace Cinemas , which has an extended cinema network in Eastern Europe but the Palace Pictures doesn't distribute only for these venues.
As a test the company in the beginning presents one film per month, mostly American independent films. The Palace Pictures cooperates with two big international owner of theatrical rights, Blue Sky and Hollywood Classics www.hollywoodclassics.com. As the leader of distribution Csilla Borka sais, the Palace Pictures has good experiences in Slovakia or in Czech Republic, so the leaving of other distributors from Hungary created a gap in the market and that was the right moment for the Palace Pictures to start up. The first experiences are nice, the introducing film of the company (Accidental Husband with Uma Thurman, Colin Firth) is a massive success, with more than 23 000 watchers within 10 days. The Palace Cinema will present the sci-fi District 9, the horror Sorority Row, or Baaria, the new film of Giuseppe Tornatore.
