Screen debut for CinEd@ys, a celebration of European cinema
Europe will be celebrating its celluloid classics with the first of a series of annual CinEd@ys weeks. Bringing together film stars and festivals, cinema and TV screenings, Internet games and events for young people organised by film museums, the idea is to allow a young generation to discover - and older people to rediscover - Europe's cinema heritage in all its diversity. Launched by Vivian Reding, the member of the European Commission responsible for education and culture, the CinEd@ys week has Spanish director Pedro Almodovar as its patron. It is supported by the Europa-Cinemas network, the Association des Cinématheques Européennes and many other partners such as municipal authorities, cinema managers, cultural associations and youth organisations. In this debut year, CinEd@ys will be linked with the Netd@ys initiative, which will focus on film studies and education in interpreting and creating the visual image.

Initiatives in favour of intercultural dialogue
At the invitation of the President of the European Commission, Romano Prodi, and Viviane Reding, the Member of the Commission responsible for Education and Culture, a conference on inter-cultural dialogue took place in Brussels on 20 and 21 March 2002, under the auspices of the European Commission’s ‘Jean Monnet Project’, in order to carry out an in-depth analysis of the various aspects of inter-cultural dialogue, and to come up with practical conclusions. These conclusions were presented to the Euro-Mediterranean meeting held in Valencia from 22 to 23 April 2002, where a programme of action for dialogue between cultures and civilisations was agreed. This plan rests on activities already developed, or in the development process, in programmes such as Meda-Youth, Euromed Audiovisual and Euromed Heritage within the context of the Euro-Mediterranean partnership, Culture 2000, Media Plus, Tempus, Netdays and eSchola.

Europeans love the cinema: more than 900 million cinema tickets are sold each year in Europe. The explosion of new TV channels has not diminished the pleasure of going to the cinema. Quite the reverse. The number of cinema-goers is increasing all the time, and there is a renewed interest in European films, not only at film festivals but also among the general public: Life is beautiful (La vita č bella) achieved 20 million admissions in Europe, Amelie (Lefabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain) 15 million, All about my mother (Todo sobre mi madre) 8 million.

European films are supported by a talented generation of directors, authors and actors, but also by committed cinema operators, such as those in the ‘Europa cinemas’ network, and by the work of the film archives and film institutes. The great names of modern European cinema, such as Moretti, Kaurismäki and Lars von Trier, are worthy heirs to the likes of Fritz Lang and Federico Fellini. Their films shape our imagination as much as they reflect it. European cinema, in all its forms, represents an important part of our heritage but also a magnificent expression of our cultural diversity, a diversity which the European Union promotes in its policies and in international forums.

In creating ‘Cinedays’, the European Union wishes to celebrate the vitality of European cinema but also to get young people interested in watching more European films, whether in mainstream cinemas, film clubs or on television, and to encourage them to discover not only the new films of today but, equally, the classics of European cinema.

There is not just one ‘European cinema’, but several. In creating ‘Cinedays’, I hope that the European public will discover the great films which are key elements of our cultural diversity, and that they will get into the habit of going to see European films.’

Viviane Reding
