Fliegauf's film at the Berlinale

17 February, 2004 - filmhu
After a long and hard debate, the jury of the readers of the Berliner Zeitung chose Dealer by Benedek Fliegauf as their favourite of the 50 feature films at the Berlinale that ended on 15 February. The award is 2500 Euros.

The reasons for the jury’s decision were given as follows: „Everything in the film is unusual and takes quite a bit of getting used to. Its fascinating world of imagery attracts the viewer from the very beginning with hypnotic charm. Those who submerge in this world go through one day of a dealer and get first day experiences of his life. He is unable to make use of the chances to find the real sense of life and the circles of internal emptiness get tighter and tighter. The camerawork, lighting and sound create a compete and perfect composition. The film follows new ways and we wish to thank the makers of the film for that.”

Fliegauf who is often referred to as the young „daredevil” of Hungarian cinema returned to Berlin as an old acquaintance. Last year his first film, Forest received the Wolfgang Staudte Prize at the Berlinale 2003. His second film was released in early February at the Hungarian Film Week where both the audience and the profession received it with admiration. It won the Best Director, the Best Screenplay and the Best Sound awards.
Fliegauf’s film Forest, which will participate in the competition of the GoEast Film Festival in Wiesbaden, has already been screened in many countries. Judging by to preliminary expression of interest, it will appear at a great number of festivals in many countries in the future as well.

Hungarian films have traditionally participated in the programme of the Berlin International Film Festival. In 2001 Werckmeister Harmonies by Béla Tarr won the award of the Berliner Zeitung.
