Parliament brings film law into line with EU regulations

Hungary's Parliament on Monday amended the motion picture law to bring it into line with the European Union regulations and limit state subsidies to productions with appropriate cultural content.

The amendment was approved by 212 votes for, one against and 155 abstentions.

Eligibility for state subsidies and tax allowances is determined on the basis of several criteria. Films that focus on Hungarian or European cultural topics, present European customs and way of life, adapt literary works or represent important Hungarian or European values are preferred.

It is an added advantage if a film's creators include citizens of Hungary or other country belonging to the European Economic Area, or winners of international film festivals.

Twenty percent of national subsidies are open for film-makers of other EU member states.
