The millennium subway is one of the curiosities of Budapest. The Andrássy avenue section of the oldest subsurface railway on the European continent was built in 1896 and enjoys a historic monument status. The white and red glazed tiles and cast iron pillars evoke the atmosphere of turn-of-the-century Budapest. The municipality of Budapest had the entire line renovated in 1996, upon the centennial anniversary of the subway.
