Classic noir and western on the Hungarian puszta
An African football player in a small Hungarian town, who commits a crime and has to flee is the main character of the new film of Hungarian director Szabolcs Hajdu. He finds refuge on a farm deep in the Hungarian flatland where soon he realizes that the farm is a modern slave camp where he is forced to fight for his freedom and ultimately his life. „Mirage is also intended to shed some light on this very serious problem of how Hungary and Hungarians treat these people from different cultures. My goal is to make a film that combines my exploration of these typically Hungarian issues with elements of a classic noir thriller and even of the classic westerns” – says the director about his project.

The production seems to be on the right track: after being invited to the prestigious Paris Project co-production forum and development platform and the Cinemart market in Rotterdam, Mirage will be present at the CineLink market in Sarajevo.

The planned budget of the film is 400-440 million HUF (cca. 1.432.000-1.575.000 Euros) half of which is already assured – producer Gábor Kovács told magyar.film.hu. The success of Hajdu’s previous film guarantees a normative support of 25 million HUF ( cca. 90.000 Euros), the Hungarian Motion Picture Association issued a declaration of intent for funding with 100 million HUF (cca. 358.000 Euros), the Hungarian private TV channel TV2 and other private investors are also behind the project. As the film will be shot in Hungary the 20% tax relief will also be applicable.

Mirage is co-written by Hajdu and Jim Stark, producer of several Jarmusch films. The shooting is planned to start in the summer of 2011.
