Hungarian Films in Cannes Again

Before Dawn, a short film by Bálint Kenyeres has been invited to the shorts program of the 58th Cannes Film Festival.

Meanwhile, the opening of Kornél Mundruczó’s latest film Johanna will take place between May 11 and 22 in the in the Un certain regard section – the Film Union announced.

The launch press conference of the prime event of the international film industry, the Cannes Film Festival was held in Paris on April 19. Two Hungarian films have been invited to the official program. Before Dawn, a short film by Bálint Kenyeres has been invited to the shorts program of the 58th Cannes Film Festival, while the international opening of Kornél Mundruczó’s latest film Johanna will take place between May 11 and 22 in the in the Un certain regard section.

The festival committee selected the participants of the official program representing the latest in film from among 4,000 nominations.  In the shorts section, nine films compete for the Palme d’Or, among them Before Dawn, a 13-minute film by Bálint Kenyeres, which won the ward for best director and best cinematograpy – Mátyás Erdély– as well. The film was produced by Inforg Stúdió with the cooperation of Duna Műhely and Windmill.
 
The opening of Kornél Mundruczó’s opera film Johanna will take place on May 15 at the Croisette.  The new  and shocking adaptation of the story of Jeanne d’Arc has been invited to the Un certain regard section of the festival, where Kontroll won the Youth Prize last year. The protagonist of Johanna, which is the joint production of T.T. Filmműhely and  Proton Cinema is Orsolya Tóth, known from other Mundruczó films, its score was composed byZsófia Tallér. In spite of his tender age, Mundruczó is not new to the Cannes Festival: in 2003 his short film was screened during the Quinzaine, while his directorial debut was invited by the Cinéfondation last year.  The Cannes event will be a fit location for the world premiere of his latest film Johanna.
