The 35th Film Week rolls on between January 27–February 3

Muhi and Durst score

Just like in previous years, two „independent” producers, András Muhi and György Durst will delegate the highest number of films to the Film Week. While Muhi, who heads Inforg Studio, has 14 competing projects (1 features, 6 shorts, 2 experimental and 5 documentary films); 12 of Durst’s productions (2 features, 3 shorts, 1 experimental film and 6 documentaries) have made it to the official Film Week program through Duna Workshop, Kép-Árnyék Bt and Duna Television.

Duna Television itself also scores this year: the public service station is involved in altogether 21 productions featured in the official program. Five feature films received financial support form the station (A mohácsi vész, Másnap, Mélyen őrzött titkok, József és testvérei, Drum-Bun - Jó utat). The channel produced three projects in-house and also supports filmmakers through the Dunatáj Foundation, which has five projects competing at the Film Week. The Duna Workshop, meanwhile, has with 3 documentaries, 3 shorts, an experimental project and a feature film (Nincs mese) in the official program.

To tell the tale

Of the 85 shorts nominated, the three-member jury panel finally picked 35. Panel member Attila Varró says he rewarded interesting and comprehensible story lines in shorts. At the same time, Varró says that many good shorts didn’t make it to the offical program, because the pre-selection system favors average works instead of daring and less conventional pieces.

Documentary dumping

According to Ferenc Hammer, a member of the panel screening competitors in the documentary section, the panel’s picks were based strictly on quality. However, the choice of an interesting subject or protagonist could save the day for more mediocre pieces as well. Nevertheless, Hammer says he was disappointed to see many documentaries during the pre-selection process that reminded him of works he had already seen in the the 1970s. Apart from the clumsy film funding system, that might be the result of the cheap technology used, or the careless editing, he adds.
