Goodbye Komárom (Goodbye Komárom)
Synopsis
Goodbye Komárom depicts the story of post war Hungarian Jews escape
from communist Hungary in 1946.
While much of the world believes that the Nazis were defeated, the surviving
Jews that escaped the Holocaust in Poland, Hungary and Lithuania, endured
renewed persecution. They were refugees and illegal immigrants making the
journey to Palestine. For the Jews of Komarom, Hungary, escape meant
crossing the treacherous Ipoly River. The night crossing of the Ipoly River is a
metaphor for the human spiritʼs desire to attain refuge and a place of
belonging. Goodbye Komarom is a story that illustrates the will to sacrifice for
the regeneration of dignity and self-determination after terrible oppression.
When, for tragic historical reasons, a nation and society turn violently against
a group of its own people, the sense of identity is shattered, and the search
for a new place of belonging begins. That is the moment where the Jews of
Komarom begin their journey – a passage to a homeland.
