Árpád Sopsits: A hetedik kör

Árpád Sopsits’ new film previously entitled Ant will also be about “problematic” children similarly to his partly autobiographical movie Abandoned, but this film portrays a fictional story. To be more precise, “The film is based upon the motives of the tragic and inexplicable events that took place in Hungary in the past years”, as the synopsis says. This filmic anthropological, psychological investigation breaks with the fake commonplace of childish innocence and deals with the problematic teenage period: “it is about the strange experience of life and death, when children’s sexual desire and lust for death is raised at the same time” - the film focuses on juvenile suicides.

Áron Gauder: Egill

Áron Gauder, who employed brand new visual and verbal techniques in his nationally and internationally acclaimed debut animated film The District!, was inspired by the Icelandic epos Egill his time. After travelling around in Iceland and living like a hermit, director Áron Gauder immersed himself in the history of the island. Egill saga is a monumental story and with its gloomy, contradictory atmosphere gives the opportunity to create a new visual language, a new style. Gauder has developed a new technology: through puppet-motion-capture the motion of the figures is more broken, more raw, less flowing than e.g. that of the characters in Shrek. The hero Egill’s character is also contradictory, not purely heroic. Sensitivity and cruelty are stirring in his soul, and the film language is also far from a clear and elevated style characteristic of eposes. And who are going to voice over the characters? Casting is taking place in Iceland at the moment and Nick Nolte is one of the potential actors giving Egill’s voice. Production is in the 3D animatic phase, which means that the scenes are made in real length and structure with rough sketches, “it is similar to a bad manga” – says Gauder. This is followed by animation, elaboration of the texture, background, motions, clothes, hair, all the details, so it is no wonder that the animation movie will only be finished by 2010. The film is made in international co-production.

Roland Vranik:Az adás

A realistic movie, an imaginary town, a negative utopia, three brothers try to survive troubled times – many mysteries surround Vranik’s latest film, the only thing that was known for sure that Károly Hajduk, who appeared in Vranik’s previous film Fekete kefe, too, would play the leading role. Vranik, who is in Constanta at the moment, said that they laid great emphasis on the venue, the imaginary town, whose vision would consist of the visual mixture of Budapest and a seaside-town – even Uzbekistan was among the potential venues. Shooting is going on as it was planned, apart from some unexpected difficulties cropping up.

Viktor Oszkár Nagy: Jandera

A drama with few characters, the story of two generations after the change of regime. Landscape is of great significance, too. The visual images were inspired by Hellen van Meene’s photos, and the story of the father and his son takes place under these circumstances. A nostalgic film that brings back the 1990s without embellished memories.

Barnabás Tóth: Rózsaszín sajt

Versatile Barnabás Tóth’s latest film portrays the differences between generations by presenting the relationship and life of a father and his son. Dani (Barnabás Tóth) is raised by his father Tibor (Zoltán Bezerédi), two very different personalities living together. The father is a successful gynaecologist, an intensely competitive, hyperactive, narcissistic personality, but sometimes immature in certain respects, whereas his son is a quiet and conservative type. Tibor tries to influence his son’s attitude, who as a result escapes to France and comes back as a different man. Despite the gloomy story, Rózsaszín sajt is a comedy, which though makes you laugh, talks about serious issues. Barnabás Tóth director of Born Loser calls his new film a Czech-French movie, which also shows some resemblance to Róbert Koltai’s We never die. French scenes are being filmed at present, but because of the low budget, starring little known French actors. Tímea Erdélyi, previously playing in the popular Hungarian TV series Barátok közt, also appears in the film.
