Less screenings, more income – box office trends in 2010 in Hungary
More people buy more expensive tickets to less screenings – this is the short summary of the analysis of Hungarian box office trends of the first half of 2010, presented by magyar.film.hu. The number of admissions has grown compared to the same period of the last year, but a considerable part of this figure is composed by the huge success of Avatar, which alone sold more than 1 million tickets. The number of total admissions has slightly grown (3.96 million versus 3.88 million), the income has considerably grown (4.77 billion HUF versus 3.99 billion) compared to the same period of the previous year.

The weight of the Hungarian films has decreased again: in 2009 almost 10% of the tickets were sold by Hungarian productions, while in the first half of 2010 only 6%. Usually evey year there are 2 or 3 Hungarian films which pass 100.000 admissions – this year there was only one, Dénes Orosz’s Polygamy, which in fact premiered already in December 2009.

A positive result can be seen on the figures of Bilbiotheque Pascal, the film which has won the main Prize of the Hungarian Film Week, and realized almost 18.000 admissions. This shows that good quality art films can reach their audience – the same happened to Zsombor Dyga’s Köntörfalak (more than 14.000 admissions).

In conclusion we can say that the average number of tickets sold to Hungarian films is 17.000, but most of this is due to Polygamy, if we take out its results, we get the very modest figure of 7.000.
