Summer box office in Hungary

12 September, 2009 - filmhu

There were many candidates in this Summer to the title „The movie of the Summer”, the first of them was an adaptation of Dan Brown's novel: the Angels & Demons was watched by 185 000 Hungarian viewers, but the amount didn't reach finally the 300 000. The Terminator Salvation didn't conquer the Hungarian audience, after 7 weeks of suffering it got out of the Top 10, gathered an audience of 172 000. As the new Transformers movie (Revenge of the Fallen) was a huge success in America (so far it reached USD 400 million domestic grosses), in Hungary only the start was promising (96 000 attendance at the opening weekend), at the end the 200 000 remained just a dream.

So there were two major competitors left fighting for the top ranking. The new Harry Potter movie (reinforced by the Half-Blood Prince) vs. Ice Age – Dawn of the Dinasaurs. The first film managed to make an incredible opening weekend: 167 000 fans flooded the cinemas at those days (some weeks all the top films are watched by less than the half of this amount), so far it was watched by 460 000 people. Not bad, but it couldn't get closer to the result of the new Ice Age-episode: this basic family movie, probably the most popular film in Hungary this year, within 10 weeks was watched by 593 000 people. Though it's yet a bit far from the result of the hit of the last year (Mamma Mia! - more than 761 000 viewers), the whole picture is nicer than last year: in spite of the global economic crisis the same amount of people attend to cinema in Hungary.
